GIS and Data Officer vacancy – The Wildlife Information Centre (Midlothian, Scotland)

The Wildlife Information Centre (TWIC) has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic person with knowledge of IT systems and GIS in the environment sector to join its small and dedicated team. This role is responsible for maintaining TWIC’s IT systems and databases. In acquiring, analysing and supplying biodiversity data, the post-holder will be liaising with a wide range of public and private organisations across south-east and central Scotland.

The Wildlife Information Centre (TWIC) is an environmental charity with an established reputation for excellence in the provision of biodiversity data within south-east and part of central Scotland. As a Local Environmental Record Centre, TWIC currently holds over 4 million species records as well as extensive habitats and designated sites information.

TWIC’s programme of events supports new and existing recorders and stimulates interest in biological recording amongst the wider public. Growing awareness of the importance of data to guide responses to the biodiversity and climate crises means that this is an exciting time for biological recording, which provides vital information to improve understanding of the state of the environment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the office IT system, including backup procedures, data security, licensing and UK GDPR compliance
  • Manage TWIC’s biological data holdings using ArcGIS, Recorder 6 and MS Access databases
  • Service data requests from clients
  • Manage the TWIC website and contribute to TWIC’s social media platforms
  • Contribute to data flow between local, regional and national recording networks

Salary: £27,825 per annum

Hours: Full-time

Contract: Permanent

Location: Hybrid working with offices based at Unit 3, Vineyard Business Centre, Pathhead, Midlothian, EH37 5XP
