The NBN Trust wants to develop a data literate culture, where the value of wildlife data is appreciated, especially in relation to its onward use.

A major reason for collating data and making it available centrally is so that it can be used in many different ways.  These uses include:

  • Environmental decision-making
  • The creation of species atlases and guides
  • Monitoring and documenting changes in the state of the environment
  • Informing discussion and debate about natural capital and ecosystem services
  • For education and ecological research
  • For nature conservation management
  • For restoration and rewilding
