iNaturalist updates

The NBN Trust, Biological Records Centre and Marine Biological Association are proud members of the iNaturalist Network, a partnership that supports iNaturalistUK. This arrangement allows people from the UK to tap into the powerful global iNaturalist community to share and identify observations and provide invaluable biodiversity data for research and conservation.

We have two updates to share with you about global iNaturalist.

iNaturalist is now an independent nonprofit organisation

After beginning life as a master’s project at the University of California, Berkeley, iNaturalist became a LLC, then joined the California Academy of Sciences in 2014. In 2017, iNaturalist became a joint initiative with the California Academy of Sciences and the National Geographic Society. Now, it is an independent, US-based nonprofit organisation.

This change won’t affect the user experience and the platform and all of the features the contributors love about it will remain the same, and all the data can still be accessed free of charge.

Since its launch in 2008, iNaturalist has grown a vibrant global community of people who care about biodiversity, and the data generated by the community serves as an essential source for research and conservation decisions around the world.

The iNaturalist community will continue to expand our collective knowledge of biodiversity long into the future, and we look forward to growing along with iNaturalist, as it enters the next phase of its organisational development.

You will find the official announcement on the iNaturalist blog and a set of FAQ’s.

150,000,000 observations on iNaturalist!

At the end of July the number of observations on iNaturalist passed 150 million! While the number of observations has been growing steadily over time, observations per month passed 5 million for the first time this summer.

You can find more information on the statistics for this remarkable achievement on iNaturalist.

You too can contribute wildlife observations by signing up at iNaturalistUK.
