Turn nature engagement into reality

Earthwatch Europe is seeking innovators to pitch new and exciting ideas that aim to re-engage the public with nature, in a bid to win £5,000 seed funding, and a working partnership with Earthwatch staff.

Event

On the evening of the 15th September, Earthwatch Europe will host an exciting event at the Royal Geographic Society (RGS), London  entitled “Lost Connection – how can we re-engage people with nature?”. The aim of this public event is to generate and explore novel ideas to help tackle our growing disconnect with nature. This will follow on from the release of the State of Nature Report 2016 (released on the 14th September), which highlights the ongoing decline of the UK’s species and habitats, and the urgent need to re-engage the public with nature, for multiple benefits. The event will take a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style format with five shortlisted applicants pitching their innovative ideas to an expert panel and live audience. The winning idea will then be voted for (by the panel and the live audience), with the winner receiving £5,000 seed funding and a working partnership with Earthwatch Europe staff, who will help to turn the winning idea into a reality.

Ideas

These may include (but are not restricted to) the following:

  • Innovative use of social media and technology
  • Development of new channels to disengaged audiences
  • The use of non-science ‘hooks’ (e.g. music, art, photography)
  • The use of locality or the creation of ‘actionable knowledge’ to increase relevance
  • Increased capacity or skills around nature engagement

Given the current state of nature and the need for urgent action, thinking outside the box will be a necessity and we will be looking for innovative, emerging organisations or individuals to participate in this.
