Yorkshire Naturalists Union has recently launched the South Yorkshire Plant Atlas
The Atlas covers the 1665 whole or part 1km squares of the old Metropolitan county, mostly in VC63 but in part vice counties 54, 56, 57 and 58. With over 200,000 records contributed in just ten years, YNU members ably assisted by members of local societies, worked hard to assemble this number.
In addition, the Biological Record Centres operated by: Doncaster MBC, Rotherham MBC and Sheffield City helped process the data.
The book has major chapters on the Geology and soils; Vegetation of South Yorkshire Landscapes; Alien Colonists; Guided Tour of Botanical Hot Spots and Plant Conservation in South Yorkshire. The book is lavishly illustrated with colour photographs, over nine hundred individual plants are mapped on backgrounds coloured to reflect altitude. There is a gazetteer, bibliography and it is fully indexed.
The Atlas is edited by: G.T.D. Wilmore, Jeff Lunn and Professor John Rodwell, together with a foreword by Professor Clive Stace.
The South Yorkshire Plant Atlas is available from Summerfield Books, 3 Phoenix Park, Penrith, Cumbria CA11 9SD at £54.50 including post and packing.
