This September, University College London (UCL), will be launching two brand new courses.
The MSc in Citizen Science and MSc in Ecology and Data Science are the first of their kind globally, and will be taught within UCL’s purpose-built People and Nature Lab at its new UCL East campus at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
MSc in Citizen Science
This degree will provide students with both the theoretical and practical experience in creating and managing citizen science projects across a wide range or disciplines, from astronomy to zoology. Students will be taught by a cross-disciplinary team of scientists, including academics from UCL’s Division of Biosciences; Computer Science; Geography; Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering; and The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment, as well as industry partners from the Zoological Society of London and the Natural History Museum. The course will link research and practice and will prepare the next generation of researchers and practitioners in the field of citizen science.
There is a rapidly growing range of jobs in this area – from designing projects to being community manager in projects that can involve hundreds or thousands of people.
The MSc in Citizen Science programme will provide students with the theoretical and practical experience in creating and managing citizen science initiatives and working with communities and individuals in collecting data, using cutting-edge technologies and methods, to address critical environmental and social questions. The programme will prepare the new generation of socially engaged researchers and practitioners to meet the growing demands in industry, government, academia and the public sectors for opening science to new groups in society.
It is the right course for you, if:
- You envision a career which involves working with communities and individuals to find solutions and address some of the most pressing and critical global challenges.
- You want to learn and gain experience in organising and managing successful upstream public engagement programmes to directly inform policy-making and have some real societal impact.
- You would like to get hands-on practical experience with real citizen science projects that prepare you for the future jobs.
- You have practical experience, but you need an in-depth understanding of the theories, methods and other conceptual frameworks in this area of research and practice.
Deadline for applications: 31st March 2022
MSc Ecology and Data Science
Students will learn the interdisciplinary skills, theoretical and practical expertise needed to apply cutting-edge innovations in data science, sensor technologies, and applied artificial intelligence to monitor and manage ecosystems and wildlife populations to understand and reverse catastrophic changes in global biodiversity. Students will have access to cutting-edge laboratories and workshops, and the ‘Living-Laboratory’ of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park designed to be home to both people and nature.
