A new look for a national marine life information project
Now in its 10th year, MarLIN – an initiative of the Marine Biological Association – is a trusted resource for anyone who needs information on marine life. This week, MarLIN launches its new and improved website.
MarLIN provides information on UK marine species and habitats for scientists, managers and policy makers. With our marine environment under pressure from a changing climate and ever-increasing human activity, accurate and up-to-date information and tools with which to apply that information have never been so important. From mapping sensitive areas of the seabed to providing a catalogue of biological traits, the MarLIN website has evolved over the past 10 years to support the sustainable use of marine resources.
The MarLIN Learning Zone website is now structured so that anyone interested in life in the sea can easily find and download the resources they need. For teachers we have developed and organised our curriculum-linked resources. Marine life recorders can upload records of their sightings and personalize their own recording page.
Currently recording around 100,000 hits per month and users in more than 200 countries, the success of the MarLIN website and the programme as a whole is down to its flexibility and responsiveness to users’ needs. MarLIN’s Strategic Director Dr Harvey Tyler-Walters said “Over the past 10 years, the MarLIN project has grown from an idea into a unique, established, authoritative and free information resource on marine life. As always we have tried to take on board the needs and suggestions of our diverse user group and we hope that everyone who uses the MarLIN website will like the new look and find it easier to locate what they need”.
All MarLIN online resources are free to use. Visit the new-look website at www.marlin.ac.uk
