Invitation to Quote: Scoping Study on Species Monitoring

Written by Dr Karen Hornigold, Conservation Monitoring and Evaluation Manager, The Woodland Trust

The Woodland Trust is seeking tenders for a scoping study to inform the development of an organisational approach to measuring and monitoring biodiversity. This work will underpin our understanding of how we are contributing to nature recovery and will help us strategically target our conservation activities for maximum impact.

About the Project

Our conservation work focuses on habitat restoration, creation, and protection, with well-established monitoring in place for habitat extent and condition. We now want to advance our approach by embedding biodiversity monitoring as a core part of our evidence base.

We are commissioning a scoping study that will deliver an outline experimental design including:

  • Recommended site selection criteria for monitoring
  • Target species or species groups
  • Methods for obtaining data (including monitoring methodologies to collect primary data and existing secondary data sources).

Given our UK-wide remit, covering all major habitat types and our ecosystem-based approach, the study must address multiple taxa, habitat types, and geographic contexts. It should also assess resource requirements and delivery models, including the use of volunteers, staff, contractors, or external partners.

Supplier Requirements

Tendering organisations must demonstrate:

  • Proven experience in designing biodiversity or species monitoring programmes
  • Expertise in species ecology, biodiversity conservation, experimental design, monitoring methodologies, data analysis, and digital tools
