How wild is your city?

Show off your city’s wild spaces and celebrate urban wildlife by taking part in the second international City Nature Challenge.

In 2018, Bristol & Bath, London and Plymouth represented the UK taking on 65+ cities on five continents to showcase the best of British urban nature. Citizens, amateur naturalists and conservationists raced to photograph and record local wildlife across four days in an epic citizen science contest. All the data collected feeds local and national datasets that help us understand and protect the nature on our doorsteps.

If you think you might want to bring the challenge to your city drop the BioBlitz team an email and:

  • Read the UK guide to City Nature Challenge (coming soon) bringing together learning from the first three UK cities to take on the challenge.
  • Meet the team at Communicate – the UK conference for environmental communicators where they’ll be showcasing what they learned in 2018 (Bristol, 23 / 24 October)
  • Meet the team at the NBN Conference where they’ll be sharing the learning and developments from 2018 to build a strong UK programme next spring (Nottingham, 21 / 22 November).

The City Nature Challenge is organised and coordinated internationally by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHMLA) and California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco (CalAcademy) – they may have been in touch with you directly already! The BioBlitz team here is working with the lead organisers and UK partners to help support UK cities navigating local idiosyncrasies and biological recording processes on this side of the pond.
