Further Masters placement at NBN Trust

We are pleased to announce that Hauwa’u Uraifa Shehu, a Data Science Masters student at the University of Salford, Manchester, has started a 12 week long placement with the NBN Trust.

Hauwa’u joins Damien High in the team, who is also on a 12 week placement.

Hauwa’u Uraifa Shehu

I am Hauwa’u Uraifa Shehu, a Data Science Masters student at the University of Salford, Manchester. I am currently working on a project with the NBN Trust and the Conchological Society to measure the metrics of taxonomic completeness in species occurrence records on the NBN Atlas.

To achieve this, several metrics will be created to assess different aspects to develop a dissimilarity matrix using environmental data (precipitation, temperature, soils, habitat).  From this, I will compare the record counts of selected terrestrial and freshwater mollusc species between grids with similar environmental conditions within the species’ current extent.

At the end of the project, the goal is to look for gaps or areas that are under reported by monitoring data across space and time.
