Field Studies Council – news and celebrations

In 1943, Field Studies Council’s founders gathered at the Natural History Museum in London to realise a vision ‘to provide opportunities for school children to study living plants and animals in their natural environment’.  From that initial meeting the Council for the Promotion of Field Studies (now Field Studies Council) was born.

The FSC is using 2013, its 70th Anniversary year, to celebrate our journey so far and to plot the onward course.

FSC Anniversary Events

Throughout the year FSC Centres are organising special events to celebrate its 70th Anniversary and there will be something for everyone.

Millport Marine Biological Station

The University Marine Biological Station Millport (UMBSM) is a higher education institute located on the island of Great Cumbrae in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland.

In December 2012 it was announced that it may be forced to close by the end of 2013 due to the withdrawal of funding.  However, on 1 January 2014, ownership will transfer from the University of London to the Field Studies Council (FSC) after a Memorandum of Understanding was signed and the transfer of ownership agreed.

So, Millport will be open for business next year, offering facilities for fieldwork at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and developing its provision through the FSC's expertise in residential and day field courses in environmental sciences of all sorts.
