Have you assigned a data license to your dataset yet?

A further milestone in continued commitment to open data and data licensing has been reached.

This month we are celebrating 160 data licenses that have now been assigned to datasets on the NBN Gateway!

By assigning data licences, data partners are helping the NBN to achieve its commitment to open data, increasing access to data and clarifying the terms and conditions for using data.

Licenses assigned so far

The breakdown of the assigned licences is shown in the table below. It’s great to see that the most popular licence is the CC-BY licence (creative commons with attribution).  This means that the owners of these datasets are happy for their data to be used openly, but while still ensuring they are attributed as the data owners wherever these data are used.

DataLicenceSummary

Why should you assign a data license?

Dataset administrators can assign one of four licences to their datasets on the NBN Gateway (including three creative commons licences and an Open Government Licence (OGL)). By assigning a pre-defined licence, it gives complete clarity as to what each dataset can be used for.

It is important to note that data licensing is a requirement for the Atlas of Living Scotland, and additional Atlas platforms as they are developed.  Therefore, by assigning data licences to their datasets, our data partners are helping to speed up the transition from moving to the new Atlas infrastructure which is to be available across the UK.

We are thrilled that so many of our data partners have helped reach this milestone, and are looking forward to seeing more licences assigned.  The NBN Secretariat would like to thank all of those who have helped the Network to reach this milestone of 160 data licences.
