Mike Majerus

Professor Michael Majerus

It is with the deepest sadness that we report the death of Professor Michael Majerus, who died peacefully after a short but severe illness during the night of 26/27 January.

Mike was the instigator of the Harlequin Ladybird survey and studied ladybirds for over 30 years.  His deep knowledge of ladybird ecology gave him great insight and confidence in predicting the extremely rapid spread of the harlequin ladybird.  During the four years that followed its arrival, Mike worked tirelessly with a dedicated team to promote and develop these surveys. He also ensured that parallel integrated and collaborative research was coordinated through lively and dynamic meetings involving all interested parties. His extensive list of publications and press articles on the harlequin ladybird is testament to the success of this activity. The Ladybird Surveys have been selected for the 2009 Royal Society Summer Exhibition, a further accolade to Mike’s exceptional leadership.

He had amazing enthusiasm and understanding of entomology, evolutionary genetics and science in general. He was an inspiration to all those who had the privilege of working with him and to others who listened to him speaking so passionately. Mike will be greatly missed by many, including all who are involved in the UK and Harlequin Ladybird Surveys. Mike’s inspiration will continue to drive us to find out more about ladybirds.

Mike’s funeral will take place on Tuesday 3rd February at the Cambridge City Crematorium at 1545.
