Natural History Museum Big Nature Day

Celebrate Big Nature Day with the Natural History Museum

You are invited to take part in an exciting event at the Natural History Museum on Sunday 27th May 2012, 11am – 5pm.  Big Nature Day will be a celebration of natural history in its broadest sense, bringing over 50 external groups to the Museum’s site to mark the UN International Day of Biological Diversity and the contribution of the OPAL (Open Air Laboratories) project to the study of nature in the UK.

The Museum will be hosting a nature fair, putting thousands of members of the public in touch with amateur naturalists, societies and recording schemes from across the country.  Regardless of whether visitors are interested in ferns, frogs, spiders or stinkhorns there will be a society or recording scheme to match!  Each group will be bringing exhibits, specimens and activities that engage visitors with their subject area in a fun, hands-on way.

Alongside the nature fair, OPAL staff will be showcasing their national surveys and regional outreach programmes to demonstrate the impact of the project to date, and to inspire new people to take part.  Big Nature Day will also see the launch of new resources to support the cub scouts Naturalist Badge, developed by the Natural History Museum, Wildlife Trusts and National Trust, helping to inspire and train a new generation of naturalists.

Big Nature Day presents an excellent opportunity for you to network with other natural history groups, learn about the facilities available to naturalists in the Museum's Centre for UK Biodiversity, and share your knowledge and enthusiasm for natural history with the visitors.

The event is free to attend.

Spaces to hold a stand are now fully booked, but please do come along with your family and friends for what promises to be a fantastic day out.  We hope to see you there!
