In 2022 city regions across the UK will be entering the City Nature Challenge, inspiring thousands of digital volunteers to take positive action for nature.
City Nature Challenge brings nature to life on our doorstep, as UK cities collaborate with over 400 city regions across the globe in an epic citizen science race against the clock: to collect as much biodiversity data as possible from Friday 29 April to Monday 2 May.
The Challenge enables people to connect with nature and learn about their local wildlife. Using a simple and accessible mobile phone app, everyone can take part by recording wildlife, helping address the climate and ecological emergencies by contributing records to local and national databases where they are used to inform conservation, management and research.

Here in the UK, we have made an effort each year to connect and collaborate between participating cities to help spread our impact beyond our city borders, share learning and raise our game.
Through lockdown of 2020 and 2021 this resulted in an amazing collaborative effort to adapt and deliver a positive, highly engaging programme when it was needed most and there will be more face to face engagement opportunities in 2022.
The Natural History Consortium (NHC) – representing Bristol and Bath in the challenge – has historically taken the role of convening this small, informal community of practice as part of its work with BioBlitz organisers across the country. City Nature Challenge offers a massive opportunity in our new socially distanced world and for 2022, NHC hopes to secure some external funding in partnership with the NBN Trust to support an even stronger national programme of activity – showcasing work regionally and raising the profile of wildlife recording nationally.
