Natural England has revealed 130 projects set to receive a share of £60 million under the Species Recovery Programme. The funds are being invested in conservation projects for threatened native wildlife from 2026 to 2029.
The Species Recovery Programme is designed to prevent extinctions and accelerate recovery of England’s most threatened species through targeted conservation action, research, habitat restoration, captive breeding and species reintroductions. Billed as the ‘largest ever investment in recovering England’s wildlife’, the programme will target 364 threatened species, including some only found in England.
Some projects include:
- Reintroducing the New Forest cicada
- Ghost orchid recovery
- National black-tailed godwit recovery across several regions.
- Safeguarding Britain’s native white-clawed crayfish
- Beaver recovery programmes
- Swallowtail butterfly conservation
