Local authorities in England can now apply for funding and a share of £9million to recruit ecologists and specialists to help deliver the government’s commitment to Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG).
BNG is a policy that requires all major developments to deliver a 10% benefit for nature. The funding will also be used to support other activities related to BNG, such as developing biodiversity plans and carrying out surveys.
Applications for the funding can be made at any time. In addition, relevant environmental and conservation organisations are encouraged to apply for ‘responsible body status’ to allow them to enter into conservation covenant agreements with landowners. Conservation covenants are a new type of legal agreement which will help secure the conservation of natural and heritage features of England’s landscape.
