One of the world’s most popular nature apps, iNaturalist helps you identify the plants and animals around you. By joining, you’ll be connecting with a community of over a million scientists and naturalists who can help you learn more about nature! What’s more, by recording and sharing your observations, you’ll create research quality data for scientists working to better understand and protect nature.

What is iNaturalistUK?

In April 2021 a UK portal, iNaturalistUK, joined the growing iNaturalist network.

The National Biodiversity Network (NBN) Trust is the co-ordinator of iNaturalistUK, with the support of the Marine Biological Association (MBA) and the Biological Records Centre (BRC). Together we want to support and promote the use of iNaturalistUK as one of a suite of recording tools available to the UK’s biological recording community.

Our institutions are all committed to supporting the efficient and timely flow of UK biodiversity data from iNaturalistUK and other wildlife recording platforms, to the end users of the data, ensuring that iNaturalistUK data meets the needs of the UK’s biodiversity data community.

Why should I record?

If you are interested in wildlife and have a general love of nature, you may want to do something to help conserve it. One really important activity you could take part in is to record and share details of the wildlife that you see. You’d be joining thousands of volunteers across the UK, who are gathering essential information to help protect and restore nature.

You can read more about this on our page about Recording wildlife – a fun way to help nature.
