A day course on the ecology and identification of British small mammals with Debbie Alston.

Small mammals are one of the most difficult groups of land based mammals to identify. They are among the most numerous mammals in the UK, but are generally under recorded. With a bit of practice, they can be recorded very easily.

This one day workshop will give you practice in identifying animals by sight using museum skins and frozen specimens. You will also look at identifying small mammals from owl pellets and from the distinctive tell-tale signs they leave behind.

In addition we will talk about the general ecology of small mammals, how best to survey for the different species and those for which specific licences to survey are required.

At the end of the session, you should be familiar with all the British small mammal species and have drawn up your own identification key for recognition of the animals by sight.
