Workshop – Non-Native Species: ecology and distribution.

Workshop will be held at CEH Wallingford on Saturday 10th March 2012
Convener: Helen Roy

Background

The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment designated invasive non-native (=alien) species, alongside climate change, habitat destruction, pollution and overexploitation, as one of the main drivers of biodiversity loss. The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) suggests a three-stage hierarchical approach to invasive non-native species: prevention, detection/surveillance and rapid response, control and eradication. Maintaining a list of non-native species within Britain is essential for underpinning decision-making. However, addressing the challenges posed by IAS requires collaboration, particularly exchanging information. At this meeting we will highlight the instrumental role of the recording schemes and societies in the development of a database containing information on alien (= non-native) species within Britain.
