There is little doubt that we must take greater stewardship of our natural environment and resource. But is valuation, the concept of Natural Capital, the best way to go about it? How good is our knowledge? Are valuation techniques robust? How can we work across the disciplines; ecology, economics and health?
Valuing Our Life Support Systems 2014, a major natural capital summit, sponsored by NERC, brings together key researchers, practitioners and business leaders to explore the evidence and ethics of a Natural Capital approach.
The Summit takes place at the British Library, London, on 6 – 7 November. Speakers include:
Professor Georgina Mace FRS, UCL
Professor William Sutherland, University of Cambridge
Professor Steve Albon, James Hutton Institute
Professor Edward Maltby, University of Liverpool.
Professor Giles Atkinson, Environmental Economist, LSE

Why should you attend?
The event will provide unique networking opportunities with accomplished academics, decision-makers in policy, business and the not-for-profit sector and between participants from the health, nature conservation and economics communities.
This event is for you if:
• You want to better understand natural capital and put this knowledge to better use;
• You want to make connections across disciplines and sectors;
• You are cautious of nature valuation and want to challenge natural capital thinking.
Through the summit we will:
• Derive a common understanding of what natural capital really means;
• Understand in plain language the natural and social science behind it;
• Find and demonstrate ways in which sectors and initiatives can work, and are working, together to apply it;
• Identify ways of ensuring that practical responses have scientific rigour;
• Communicate recommendations for ways forward across the sectors.
