Grasses, Sedges and Rushes make up almost a third of the British Flora; yet many botanists and ecologists shun them as to difficult to identify in part due to their small flowering and fruiting parts that can look quite similar.

Following an introduction to Grasses, Sedges and Rushes and how to separate them we will concentrate on the key characters that define members of the Juncaceae.

This one day workshop will provide an introduction to this family and we will look at and identify a wide range of fresh and preserved material. In addition to a range of common rushes, we will also look at some of the less common species which are also good habitat indicators. At the end of the session, you should be familiar with the main features of Rush vegetative parts and flowers and the diagnostic features that separate out the common species. You will also have an opportunity to key out some less common specimens.
