Introduction to the Ecology and Identification of UK Macro-moths

Location:
The Gateway, Chester Street, Shrewsbury, SY1 1NB
Starts:
Wednesday 16 August 2017, 10:00
Ends:
Wednesday 16 August 2017, 16:00

Moths are one of the hardest invertebrate groups to get to grips with, due to their relative diversity both morphologically and in terms of ecology.

In the UK there are around 2,500 species of moth, with around 800 of these being larger or ‘macro-moth’ species.

This one day workshop will give you practice in identifying some UK macro-moths down to at least family, if not sub-family, genus or species. In addition we will talk about the general ecology of UK macro-moths, including their habitat preferences, feeding behaviours and specialisms, and phenology.

At the end of the session, you should be familiar with the main families of UK moths, the key diagnostic features for moths, and have an overview of their varied ecology and
habitat preferences.

Tutor: Emma Coulthard is a lecturer in Ecology for Manchester Metropolitan University who specialises in the landscape ecology of UK moths.

Useful items to bring are a 10x hand lens. Advice on identification books will be given on the course. Please feel free to bring any ‘mystery specimens’ you may have.

Cost: £45.00
