A day course on the ecology and acoustic identification of British bats with Lisa Worledge.

This one day course is aimed at those who are new to bats and would like to know more. Bats are amazing animals but being nocturnal they can be a challenge to identify. However, with some basic knowledge and a simple heterodyne bat detector the world of bats can begin to open up to you.

This day will provide an introduction to bat biology and ecology, looking at some of the life traits that make bats so special. We’ll consider the threats bats face, how they are protected and key conservation actions for these vulnerable species. The rest of the day will be spent on how to use a bat detector and the acoustic identification of bats. An important part of identifying bats rests with our own hearing abilities. By familiarising ourselves with the basic elements of bat sound and training our hearing through practice, we can begin to identify bat species in the field. The day will end with an opportunity to find out how to get more involved with bat conservation, locally and nationally.

At the end of the day, you should be familiar with British bat species and be able to use a heterodyne bat detector to help identify common species/species groups in the field.

Tutor: Lisa Worledge is the Head of Conservation Services for the Bat Conservation Trust. She is a licenced bat worker and regularly gives talks and runs workshops aimed
at engaging people with bats and their conservation.

No special equipment is needed and example bat detectors will be available on the day.

However, if you do have your own detector please feel free to bring it along. Advice on identification resources will be given on the course.
