Making good records, collecting voucher specimens, and getting involved with recording schemes near you.

This one day workshop will provide an introduction to making ‘biological records’ – the accepted format for wildlife observations. We will look at the schemes and societies involved, we will make some records, learn how to make accurate and precise grid references, and how to submit our records to the right people and organisations so they are used for conservation and research. We will also look at how to make voucher specimens of various types, from moss and liverwort packets, herbarium sheets, invertebrate vouchers, and other types of evidence of your sightings.

At the end of this session, you should know:

  • The minimum requirements for a record
  • The organisations involved in recording
  • How to make accurate and precise grid references
  • What vice-counties are and why they are important
  • How to make an appropriate voucher specimen
  • The legal aspects of recording (from collecting specimens to sharing data).

Useful items to bring are a 10x handlens as we will go out briefly to make a record, and if you have a GPS, or GPS app on your smart phone that would be useful.

Suitable for independent wildlife surveyors, wildlife trust volunteers, junior ecologists. ID skills not necessary.

The cost is £45 and prior booking is essential
