A day course on identifying the larger fungi with Jeanette Maddy.

Have you ever wanted, or struggled, to identify a fungus? Would you like to participate in the recording of fungi? If you are unsure of where to begin or what would be involved, then this course will be of interest to you.

Our focus will be on the larger fungi i.e. those species which produce the fruit bodies commonly referred to as mushrooms or toadstools. Following a short introduction to the fascinating world of fungi, we will take a look at fruit body structure and the characters shared by species of particular genera. Using fresh specimens we will practice capturing descriptions of diagnostic features. A number of possible approaches to identification will then be introduced, including the use of keys.

By the end of the course you will be familiar with basic fungal terminology, should be able to recognise several genera, and will have a good understanding of what steps to take when attempting to identify common larger fungi at least to genus and possibly to species.
