A day course on the identification of broadleaved deciduous trees and shrubs in winter with Mark Duffell.

Winter is seen as a time of year when little useful field botany can be done, but that is not the case with deciduous broadleaved trees and shrubs. Once the leaves have fallen they are in many ways easier to identify.

The day starts with an introduction to the key characters used in the identification of deciduous trees and shrubs, with an illustrated talk and specimens. Emphasis will be placed on key characters to distinguish each species from similar looking plants.

This is a day course aimed at the keen beginner and improver alike, providing an introduction to winter tree identification Please feel free to bring any ‘mystery specimens’ you may have.

At the end of the session, you should be familiar with the main features of the key genera and the diagnostic features that separate out the common species.  You will also have an opportunity to key out some less common specimens.
