Alex Rabeau – NBN Conference 2026
Alex Rabeau. PhD will be giving a talk on:
“Applying AI Forecasting to Species Distribution Modelling Using the NBN Atlas”
Abstract: Accurate forecasting of species distributions can improve our understanding of how species respond to environmental change, supporting more effective environmental monitoring, evidence-based conservation strategies, and the early identification of emerging invasive species trends. Such forecasts typically rely on linking species occurrence records with environmental conditions to predict how distributions vary across space and time. The NBN Atlas provides a valuable resource for this work, bringing together more than 387 million species occurrence records from over 190 data partners across the UK. Building on this wealth of biodiversity data, SPHERE-PPL is an initiative aimed at advancing the application of forecasting models to environmental datasets. In this talk, Alex will present the latest SPHERE-PPL forecasting contest, delivered in collaboration with the NBN Trust. The contest challenges participants to develop models capable of forecasting the occurrence of nine UK species within a designated region in 2026.
Alex is an environmental researcher specialising in machine learning, statistical modelling and geospatial data analysis. He’s passionate about applying data-driven approaches to climate and biodiversity challenges. SPHERE-PPL (Imperial College London) aims to advance AI forecasting across health, environmental and spatial domains. A key focus is building networks that connect organisations with analytical experts.
