What is it that excites, motivates and inspires him to record?

“My real passion is demystifying stuff for myself and other naturalists, researchers, and policy-makers – both experts (peers, academics etc.) and non-experts/general naturalists so that they can be more effective recorders and conservationists. That includes i) making large and ‘difficult’ insect groups easier to identify by writing books, reports and papers and placing high quality images and text/keys on the internet through my Flickr site or through other online platforms like society websites (e.g. BWARS https://bwars.com/content/identification-guides-and-downloads) or Researchgate https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Steven-Falk-2/research, ii) producing reports that celebrate the modern insect assemblage of iconic parts of the British Isles e.g. the South Downs, Cairngorms, Upper Deeside, Ben Lawers area, New Forest and Outer Hebrides (with several others in preparation) – so that we can better understand and conserve those assemblages (e.g. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/370100523_An_entomological_survey_of_some_Cairngorms_sites_2022).

I particularly love taking a rare/threatened and poorly understood species and getting as much useful/reliable info on its distribution, appearance, behavior and ecology into the public domain without any paywalls or membership walls getting in the way (hence the heavy usage of Flickr and Researchgate) Here is an example for the scarce and IUCN internationally Near Threatened Sea Aster Bee:  https://www.flickr.com/photos/63075200@N07/albums/72157636022229633/. This allows others (both experts and non-experts) to study and conserve such a species more easily.”
