The UK is home to 24 species of bumblebee, including 6 species of cuckoo bumblebee. These important pollinators are social insects, with fascinating ecology and life cycles.

Dr Nikki Gammans will focus on the 8 species of UK bumblebee that are rare or have localised distributions in this webinar. We’ll look at how these can be distinguished from similar-looking species and discuss what we know about their distributions, threats and conservation status.

At the end of the session, learners should feel more comfortable submitting records of the following species to iRecord:

– Ruderal Bumblebee (Bombus ruderatus)

– Broken-belted Bumblebee (Bombus soroeensis)

– Bilberry Bumblebee (Bombus monticola)

– Great Yellow Bumblebee (Bombus distinguendus)

– Red-shanked Carder Bumblebee (Bombus ruderarius)

– Shrill Carder Bumblebee (Bombus sylvarum)

– Brown-banded Carder Bumblebee (Bombus humilis)

– Moss Carder Bumblebee (Bombus muscorum)
