Sarah Staunton-Lamb – NBN Conference 2026
Sarah Staunton-Lamb will be giving a talk on:
“Community Action powered by Citizen Science: Exploring Citizen Science through the lens of Earthwatch’s Naturehood project and branching out to communities through Tiny Forests, food gardens and fresh water.”
Abstract: In response to the State of Nature report in 2016, Earthwatch looked to find more impactful ways of using its Citizen Science experience to better connect communities to nature – we wanted to create thriving ‘Naturehoods’ where neighbours work together to create and nurture a network of wildlife rich green spaces. Communities are using data collected through Citizen Science to better advocate for change in their neighbourhoods, to monitor external impacts of climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss and we are supporting them to be the advocates of change on the ground. This session will explore a number of community based initiatives, where data collected has enabled communities to take action to protect their local environment, whilst also understanding the bigger picture of national and global environmental challenges.
Sarah is Head of Learning, Engagement and Communities at Earthwatch Europe. With 30 years’ experience of working in the environmental and education sectors, Sarah leads Earthwatch’s science and engagement programmes which support teachers, young people, early career scientists, conservation staff and communities. Earthwatch connects people with nature and champions science-led action. We are impact led and powered by science.
