There are over 40 species of slugs in Britain, with nearly three-quarters of these found in Scotland. Although they are often unpopular garden visitors and considered pests, very few species feed on live plants. Slugs are an important part of the ecosystem, breaking down organic matter, but are often overlooked and under-recorded. Reporting the slugs you see can make a real difference and contribute to understanding them and their rapidly-changing distributions, including the effects that climate change may be having.
Join expert Chris du Feu to learn more about these fascinating creatures. The training will take place indoors, featuring a presentation and practice using identification guides. The indoor element will conclude at 12.30pm but will be followed by an optional slug hunt, where we will get more tips on where to find them and see how many different species we can find.
Please note that participants will be required to collect slugs to bring with them to identify on the day. Full instructions will be provided before the event on how to do this. This training will focus on slug species that can be identified alive.
