The need to clarify data flows, and also to celebrate the commitment of NBN data partners to sharing their data as part of our national Network is well overdue.

The NBN Strategy consultation process, and the Biological Recording Online Working Group has highlighted the need to implement a system of ‘NBN data sharing badges’ which can be embedded into online recording sites, project websites and promotional literature to indicate who is currently sharing data through the NBN Gateway.

We have been seeking feedback via the NBN Forum and also from members of the Working Group to feed into this process to date. Tom Hunt, ALERC and Rachel Stroud, NBN Secretariat will be running a workshop at the NFBR conference on the 12th May to discuss this proposal further. However, there will be further opportunity after the NFBR conference to feed into and finalise this proposal.

If you are interested in this topic, there are two information documents which can be found on the Biological Recording Online Working Group webpage

A design brief of how others use badging systems, with some mock designs

A project brief with some background to the proposal and a set of consultation questions.

Please use the NBN Forum thread to feed your thoughts into this proposal (you will need to be a registered user) or email support@nbn.org.uk by 20th May

Many thanks in advance and we look forward to hearing your views.

The NBN Action Plan has now been published and is available to download.

The NBN Secretariat really values the time that all consultees put into responding to the Action Plan and we have taken on board your comments and suggested changes. These changes have all been outlined in the Action Plan Table of Changes – March 2016 for your reference.

Most significantly, the total number of actions has reduced from 104 to 95 following a merger of various duplicate actions flagged up during the consultation process.

Work in 2016

The Action Plan also highlights the role of the Working Groups in implementing the Action Plan this year.

You can read more about Working group progress in the news article.

We look forward to continuing this work with you throughout 2016 and beyond, and once again thank you for the time you have committed so far in starting to realise the NBN Strategy.

To deliver the NBN Strategy, eight working groups are being set up to tackle actions identified as priorities by Network members in the recent round of consultation.

The working groups will focus on:

Quality control and verification

Mobilising historic data

Biological recording online

Improving biological data flows

Increasing use of our data

Captivating and engaging people

Network support and development

Strategy for the UK Species Inventory

Two working groups, ‘Quality Control and Verification’ and ‘Biological Recording Online’, have now been fully formed and an initial meeting was held on the 12th February. The membership of these groups was informed by the Action Plan consultation. Invitations were then circulated to ensure we formed groups that accurately represented the diversity of our Network. The draft Terms of Reference for these groups can be found at the links below and are currently in the process of being formalised following the first meeting. Minutes of these meetings will be available for Network discussion soon.

Each working group has a dedicated space on this website where you can follow progress of the group, feed into discussions and access relevant documentation.

We will shortly be circulating invitations to join the additional six working groups and it is expected that members will agree to at least a 12 month commitment. This will include two meetings and around two days’ work in the intervening period. Organisations will, however, only be asked to commit to what they know you can achieve. If actions arise that group members are not able to deliver themselves, the Working Group and NBN Secretariat will seek additional resource.

Each working group meeting will be chaired by an NBN Trustee and the NBN Secretariat will provide secretarial support for meetings and the group.

We look forward to continuing to work with you as these working groups progress.
