This advice and the examples given will help you when using, referencing and acknowledging data or information that you use from the NBN Gateway in written documents and publications.

Access to and use of material accessed through the NBN Gateway is governed by the NBN Gateway Terms and Conditions.

Relevant extracts from the NBN Gateway Terms & Conditions

a) subject to paragraph 2.5 of the Gateway Terms and Conditions you must only publish the level of detail that a public user has to the records on the NBN Gateway. This is the level of detail you have without logging in to the site. If (as a registered user) you are granted enhanced access to restricted information you must not disseminate, deliberately compromise or otherwise infringe the confidentiality of such information without first obtaining written permission from the relevant Data Provider.

b) subject to paragraph 2.4 of the Gateway Terms and Conditions you must acknowledge the relevant data providers that are sharing their records with you through the NBN Gateway.  In addition, where you make specific use of or reference to a particular wildlife record you must acknowledge the Original Recorder [where their name is made available]

c) subject to paragraph 2.8 of the Gateway Terms and Conditions any document or product that makes use of data from the Gateway must contain a statement that the Data Provider, Original Recorder [where identified], and the NBN Trust bear no responsibility for any further analysis or interpretation of that material, data and/or information.

Referencing a map from the NBN Gateway in documents or presentations

The NBN Gateway and all the data contributors must be acknowledged.  Acknowledgement of the data contributors can be done either by including the organisation’s name alongside the map or where the list is too long to list them all, it should be done by adding a hyperlink to the map being used which lists all of the data contributors and the datasets beneath it.

Underneath the map you must use the following copyright line:

  • “Crown copyright and database rights 2011 Ordnance Survey [100017955].”

Example 1 – where there is a very long list of data contributors, as shown beneath the map for Japanese Knotweed, you must use the following line:

  • Data courtesy of the NBN Gateway with thanks to all the data contributors. The NBN and its data contributors bear no responsibility for the further analysis or interpretation of this material, data and/or information.

If it is not possible to list all of the dataset providers, you must use the hyperlink to the list of datasets and dataset providers, which in this example is: https://data.nbn.org.uk/Taxa/NHMSYS0000458716/Grid_Map

Example 2 – where there are only a few data contributors, as shown beneath the map for Red Slug, you must credit the relevant data contributors, which in this example would be:

  • Data courtesy of the NBN Gateway and provided by Conchological Society of Great Britain & Ireland, Sheffield Biological Records Centre, Staffordshire Ecological Record, South East Wales Biodiversity Records Centre, Wiltshire and Swindon Biological Records Centre, Suffolk Biological Records Centre, Worcestershire Biological Records Centre, West Wales Biodiversity Information Centre, Kent & Medway Biological Records Centre, The Wildlife Information Centre, Highland Biological Recording Group, Herefordshire Biological Records Centre and Bristol Regional Environmental Records Centre.   The NBN and its data contributors bear no responsibility for the further analysis or interpretation of this material, data and/or information.

Referencing for web mapping services

All the Web Mapping Services (WMS) support a list of data providers in the GetCapabilities response, which is the standard location for such information. If you are using WMS, you will need to extract this data and display it on your website, so that the relevant data providers are credited.
