A day course on basic microscopy techniques with Martin Godfrey.

The use of the compound microscope is essential in the detailed study of higher plants; in particular the morphology and estimates of fertility of fern spores and flowering plant pollen and carrying out counts of chromosomes.  In addition this instrument can provide detailed morphological information, such as nodal anatomy and the number, size and structure of stomata, which is unavailable by other means.

In addition to the compound microscope the effective use of the low-power dissecting microscope is a valuable aid to all aspects of botany.

At the end of the course you will understand the set up and use of the microscope and will practice a variety of techniques including simple dissection and slide preparation, including the examination of dried herbarium material.
