Natural History Live by Jennifer Jones

The bilberry bumblebee (Bombus monticola) used to be relatively widespread in the UK, but has recently declined and can now only be found in a few localised hotspots. The Bilberry bumblebee project, which has been led by the National Trust, the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and volunteers in Shropshire aimed to assess the bilberry bumblebees distribution on the Long Mynd, and where these bees went when floral resources were not available. In this talk, we’ll explore how these aims were achieved and the future of this charismatic bumblebee in the West Midlands region.

Jennifer Jones has an ecological background, with a BSc in Ecology from Aberystwyth University and has just completed her MSc in Entomology at Harper Adams. She has had an obsessive interest in bees and their conservation, especially bumblebees, for as long as she can remember. She was also part of the volunteer project to learn more about bilberry bumblebees in Shropshire.

The FSC is now delivering a series of Natural History Live events. These events are free online natural history talks, comprising of a 30-40 minute talk from a guest speaker, followed by a question and answer session. We host them on Zoom and we will send out joining instructions on the day of the event.
