Ends:

This one day workshop will take you through everything you need to know in order to start building a pinned entomological reference collection.

We will cover the legal and ethical issues surrounding collecting, the practical fieldwork skills required to collect specimens, and then move to the classroom to learn and practice the skills involved in preserving, setting and pinning invertebrates.

We may spend part of the day out of doors when discussing some relevant techniques, so please bring clothing and footwear suitable for the expected conditions on the day.

Don’t forget to bring a packed lunch since catering is not provided. (Tea and coffee is provided.)

Tutors

The course will be led by Shropshire based entomologists Pete Boardman and Ian Cheeseborough, with support from the FSC Tomorrow’s Biodiversity project.

Pete Boardman is an entomologist and ecologist whose specialisms include tipulids (craneflies). He managed a succession of Field Studies Councils projects delivering training in ID and survey skills at all levels from beginner to expert, latterly concentrating on the ‘uncharismatic’ groups including soil fauna. He is now a field entomologist in Natural England’s Field Unit.

Ian Cheeseborough works for the FSC as a grounds and habitat manager at Preston Montford. He is also a self-employed entomologist. He has been studying Aculeate Hymenoptera – bees, wasps and ants for the past sixteen years and is County Recorder for this group of insects. He also runs a number of courses on aculeate identification at several FSC centres.
