What a month for data!

As the evenings are getting lighter and the days are getting warmer, we’re all starting to look forward to the survey season that will soon be upon us.

It would also appear that this is the time of year when many Network members collate last year’s data and update or upload datasets on the NBN Gateway.

A growing number of records

The NBN Gateway data loading team has been sent 191 new datasets from 50 data partners since the beginning of March. This phenomenal influx of data is a huge contribution to our national database, and we thank you all for your continued effort and support of the NBN Gateway. As the number of records and datasets on the NBN Gateway grows, so does our understanding of the state of biodiversity in the UK, leading to more well-informed decisions and more targeted conservation effort.

From 95 to 125 million

The growth of the NBN Gateway data holdings has been steadily increasing over the last few years. In April 2014 the NBN Gateway held 95.1 million records, this number increased by a further 15 million records to 110.1 million in April 2015, and currently at the start of  April 2016 the NBN Gateway now stores over 125 million records. This further 15 million increase over the last year is thanks to the hard work and commitment of the NBN’s data partners.

Fewer errors

The datasets that are reaching our data loading team are also cleaner than ever, with fewer errors needing to be addressed. These high quality datasets are quicker and easier to load and help us keep the NBN Gateway as current as possible. We would like to extend a thanks to all data partners who are clearly putting significant effort into processing their data for upload.

Processing the uploads

Out of the 138 datasets to update and 53 new datasets that have been sent through, 110 datasets have already been uploaded to the NBN Gateway. These amount to 72 update datasets and 38 new! The NBN Gateway data loading team are working hard to ensure that the rest of these datasets are uploaded in good time, but please be patient in the interim as they have a big job ahead of them to process the volume of datasets that have been sent through.

Please continue to send us your data, it’s great to see the Network working together to create a bigger and more powerful resource as we move into the next financial year!
