Media Guidelines for using maps or data from the NBN Gateway
This advice and the examples given will help you when using, referencing and acknowledging data or information that you use from the NBN Gateway in online news stories as well as TV or associated media. Access to and use of material accessed through the Gateway is governed by the Gateway Terms and Conditions
Using and referencing data from the NBN Gateway
1) You must only publish the level of detail that a public user has to the records on the NBN Gateway. This is the level of detail you have without logging in to the site. If (as a registered user) you are granted enhanced access to restricted information you must not disseminate, deliberately compromise or otherwise infringe the confidentiality of such information without first obtaining written permission from the relevant Data Contributor. This is in accordance with paragraph 2.5 of the Gateway Terms and Conditions.
2) You must acknowledge the relevant data contributors that are sharing their records with you through the NBN Gateway. In addition, where you make specific use of or reference to a particular wildlife record you must acknowledge the Original Recorder [where their name is made available]. This is in accordance with paragraph 2.4 of the Gateway Terms and Conditions.
You must also acknowledge the NBN Gateway as follows:
-
Information courtesy of the NBN Gateway
You must also use the copyright line beneath any map you are using:
-
"Copyright © Crown Copyright. All rights reserved NERC 100017897 2004."
3) Any document or product that makes use of data from the Gateway must contain a statement that the Data Contributor, Original Recorder [where identified], and the NBN Trust bear no responsibility for any further analysis or interpretation of that material, data and/or information. This is in accordance with paragraph 2.8 of the Gateway Terms and Conditions
Referencing a map from the NBN Gateway in online features or stories
The NBN Gateway and all the data contributors must be acknowledged. Acknowledgement of the data contributors can be done either by including the organisation’s name alongside the map or where the list is too long to list them all, it should be done by adding a hyperlink to the map being used which lists all of the data contributors and the datasets beneath it.
Underneath the map you must use the following copyright line:
-
"Copyright © Crown Copyright. All rights reserved NERC 100017897 2004."
Example 1 – where there is a very long list of data contributors, as shown beneath the map for Japanese Knotweed, you must use the following line:
-
Data courtesy of the NBN Gateway with thanks to all the data contributors. The NBN and its data contributors bear no responsibility for the further analysis or interpretation of this material, data and/or information.
Example 2 – where there are only a few data contributors, as shown beneath the map for Red Slug, you must credit the relevant data contributors, which in this example would be:
-
Data courtesy of the NBN Gateway and provided by Greenspace Information for Greater London, Suffolk BRC, Staffordshire Ecological Record, West Wales Biodiversity Information Centre and Worcestershire BRC. The NBN and its data contributors bear no responsibility for the further analysis or interpretation of this material, data and/or information.
If it is not possible to include a reference to the data contributors you must at least use:
-
Map produced through the NBN using data provided by other organisations
Referencing a map from the NBN Gateway in a TV news story
We recognise that it is difficult to make in depth acknowledgements in this form of media, so we give the following guidance.
Where a map will be on screen for a few seconds, please use the following:
-
Data courtesy of the National Biodiversity Network and all its contributors
Where a map is used and there will be narrative to accompany it, please use the following:
-
The map is courtesy of the National Biodiversity Network and all its data contributors
Unsure of what credit you should give?
If you are unsure about how to acknowledge the maps that you would like to use, please contact the NBN Trust Secretariat at support@nbn.org.uk or on 0115 959 6435.
Interpreting the data for your news story
Where your deadlines permit, we would be happy to ask the data contributors to provide further interpretation of the maps and data you wish to use. Please contact us at support@nbn.org.uk or on 0115 959 6435 if we can be of assistance.
