Overall purpose of Job

To work with groups and organisations all over the UK to help them share wildlife information they hold more widely. This role provides good practice advice on policy, standards and tools which help address constraints and maximise the availability and use of wildlife data. Employed by the NBN Trust.

About Paula

I joined the NBN Trust in August 2010, having previously worked as a Local Authority Biodiversity Officer, Local Records Centre employee and Wildlife Trust Project Officer.  The services provided by the NBN were extremely valuable to me in all these roles.

I am an enthusiastic amateur recorder and am very proud to have contributed records to the Gateway.  In my spare time I work as a tutor, survey diver and data officer for the national recording scheme Seasearch, braving the cold North Sea in the name of biological recording!  I’m also a member of the Yorkshire Naturalists Union and a keen contributor to iSpot

I have a degree in Life Sciences from the Open University and a Certificate in Biological Recording from Birmingham University.  I also have a postgraduate degree in modern languages, which sometimes helps with deciphering those Latin species names

I recently moved to the beautiful city of York, where I am enjoying the rich wildlife of the surrounding countryside and the fabulous Yorkshire coastline within easy reach.

I am pleased to have joined the NBN Trust at this exciting time; so much has been achieved over the last 10 years, and there is a clear strategy for consolidating and building on these achievements.  I look forward to working with the wide range of organisations involved in biological recording in the UK so that we can all play our part in the future development of the NBN.

About Graham

I have always, right from an early age, had a innate curiosity in the natural world, with a keenness to understand whats going on around me. During my teenage years I developed an enthusiasm for birdwatching and practical conservation work. These interests helped see me through my medical training, at the University of Manchester and subsequent work as a junior house doctor.

In 1996, a growing interest in botany led to my leaving the NHS to go back to full time education. This culminated in a first class honours degree in Ecology with Biology, at the University of East Anglia, and a postgraduate degree on the “Conservation genetics of British Euphrasia (eyebrights)” at the University of Edinburgh and Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

Studying biology made me appreciate that successful conservation is built on a foundation of good biological recording and so, after a period volunteering at a local records centre and working as database manager for the British Dragonfly Society, I joined the NBN Trust as a Technical Liaison Officer in 2007.
