This year’s Big Butterfly Count is running for three weeks from Saturday 19th July – Sunday 10th August.  The Big Butterfly Count is run by Butterfly Conservation in association with Marks & Spencer as part of their Plan A commitments to encourage sustainable agriculture and help to protect the environment.

The Big Butterfly Count is a major project, launched in 2010, aimed at involving members of the public in a nationwide survey of butterflies during July, the peak time in the year for butterflies. The survey is the biggest survey of butterflies in the world and one of the largest citizen science projects of its kind.

Anyone can take part, young or old, fit or frail. All you need is access to a sunny open space, where you might see butterflies, either near your home or on holiday. Gardens are ideal, but you can choose anywhere you can see butterflies, whether in parks or on countryside walks. Simply count how many of each different type of butterfly that you see during a 15 minute period. Sightings can be submitted online via a dedicated website or via the free Big Butterfly Count smartphone app (available for iOS and Android devices).
